EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION REPROCESSING

What is Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing?

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing is an evidence-based and effective treatment that is used to address different psychological issues and to diminish negative feelings and disturbing emotions, especially those associated with traumatic events. In particular, it is helpful in addressing past stressful situations and treating conditions such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Chronic Pain and Depression.

EMDR differs from other therapies in that it uses bilateral sensory processing (for example rapid eye movements) to alleviate the distress and negative feelings associated with traumatic memories and experiences. While keeping the feelings and memories of distressing events in mind, you will follow the side-to-side finger movements of the therapist or listen to alternating (left to right) bilateral auditory stimulation. This strategy enables you to process your negative feelings and let go of the pain or discomfort that you may have regarding those particular disturbances or experiences and then replace them with positive beliefs and thoughts. EMDR typically takes between 15-30 sessions depending on the nature of the problem.

At Elumind, through EMDR we help you regain control of your life and release and process past trauma or suffering through an 8-step process:

  1. Take a full personal history
  2. Prepare the client (utilize the client’s deeper psychological resources)
  3. Assess the target memory
  4. Desensitization
  5. Installation
  6. Body scan
  7. Closing the session
  8. Evaluate treatment results
